      1. Hi there,
Mathilda here, from Sout Africa, have RA for a year. Heart effusion in the perricardium. now my shoulders and hands are just always sore. I feel guilty to be sore all the time. My work is threatened, use my hands a lot! Taking methotrexate. Make me feel bad for 2 days after taking (taking 10). Now my lungs are a problem. pain in lungs and shortness of breath. What about stem cell treatment. I would love to be without pain.

  2. Arthritis cripples one’s body from within and extracts the energy from and damages the smooth coordination of our muscles.I have been suffering from this ailment for a few years now and before I got introduced to Dr.Akerkar I had almost transformed my body into a research center with different types of cures that were medically and also non-medically suggested.I had fearful doubts about consuming methotrexate when it was prescribed by doctor as I had read and heard about its actual use for a non curable disease and that of its severe sideeffects but after browsing through the articles written by Dr.Akerkar and understanding that arthritis patients are treated with small doses of this medicine because it is like golden cure I agreed to continue with the treatment. Now after almost a year I am back to being my usual cheerful self unlike the depressed, irritated person I used to be while I was in pain.I shall always be thankful to Dr.Akerkar for giving me a new lease of life.

  3. thank you Sandhya for your letter… our weather here in MA has been terrible so far for this spring…. and a poor start for summer… needless to say the “bones” hurt a bit.. off to see my RA Doc Friday and need to chat a bit…
a few weeks back my right leg just started to swell , not so much pain but it felt like it was “bursting”….. i took prednisone for about 10 days… (tapering off as i stopped…) only one per day, but i felt it helped… now my right foot seems tight and swollen all the time…. i’m not sure what a “flare” is like, but expect to find out on Friday…. I guess i like dealing with it as it comes instead of worrying all the time… Some of this just might be my getting “older”..hehehe…
I hope your feeling well and enjoy reading the thoughts of others in the same boat… thanks for writing…. Barbara

    1. Dear Rajesh,

Given the fact that you have NASH, there will always be restrictions on the DMARDs that you can take.

You can take HCQS with NASH. You need to consult a Rheumatologist asap. Given the complexities in your case, it would be prudent to see a Rheumatologist instead of an orthopedic surgeon even if it means traveling for a few hours.

  7. HI! I had arthritis since 15 yrs. in 1996 when i was detected RA positive i had severe pain in multiple joints and my mobility was restricted. ( I was in late twenties). I ws put on NSAIDs. For one year i had chronic pain. later I conceived. My joint pain subsided. After child birth occasionally I used to get acute pain on rotation when the weather was humid or some infection in my body. I took only analgesics when pain aggravated. Now from last 3 months i have pain in my right wrist, swelling only. I have infection in my teeth which needed extraction. I am under dental treatment. MY ESR , SGPT, CBC, Uric acid is quite normal. ANA is moderate positive. RA factor is quite elevated 337.60 IU/mL (may be due to infection in teeth. …?). My ortho has advised me DMARD sulfasalazine. Do I require it ? I have great will power becos of which I am coping up with Arthritis. kindly advice.

    1. Dear Poornima,

You seem to be having a flare of rheumatoid arthritis. The best treatment for RA is DMARDs & not analgesics.
Sulphasalazine is a good DMARD but may not be sufficient to take care of RA. Combination of DMARDs & not a single DMARD is the norm today.

A Rheumatologist rather than an Ortho surgeon would be a better person to guide you.

  8. this is very common to consult orth surgeon instead of Rheumatologist. lot of lack of awareness in this regard. Main reasons is that Orth surgeon never educate RA patients to refer Reumatologist, they start treatment as a part of their marking/ profit motive

  10. I have found an excellent book entitled “A will to win ” by Alice Peterson. I have this copy of this book translated in Marathi by Uday Kulkarni and Published by Mehata Publishing House.

This is the real life story of a Tennis player having suffered from Rheumatoid Arthritis from the age of 18.

She lives in London at Noting Hill.

With the help of medication she can live without anybody’s help. She got her freedom with the help of medication.

Writing has now become her full fledged profession and she has written many books, specifically on on the lives of disableled -shall I say differently abled people–

She helps and guides the Rheumatoid Arthritis with the help of Rheumatoid Arthritis Society.

A book must read by every RA patient.

  15. I love to share to my conquer over Reactive arthritis. It started when I had food in my office canteen in March 2012. Next day I started having bad stomach which I ignored for atleast one week. I took domestic ways to fight with this. Next week I left for Hyderabad for a weeks training. In Hyderabad, I developed pain in my ankles and knees.
BANG!!! After two weeks, I was not able to stand, forget about walk. My knees were swollen and had intense pain. I was forced to use wheel chair at airport and during my entire travel from Hyderabad to my home. I went to hospital directly and refused to be admitted as I did not take it seriously. Very next day, I started having unbearable pain and hence went to Bethany hospital where I got admitted.
Till this point my family were shocked. People developed thoughts that may be this is because of some “Jadoo-Tona” (black magic). By the way, I was treated very well in Bethany hospital and doctor Piyush Sharma did a small procedure to reduce my knee pain. However, it was doctor S. M. Akerkar who identified it as Reactive arthritis.
With the help of doctor’s guidance and treatment, today I am able to attend my office regularly. Though I still experience pain when I walk fast, but I am sure that in couple of months I will start running. Thanks to Dr. S. M. Akerkar, Dr. Piyush Sharma and entire Bethony Hospital staff.
Reactive arthritis is curable. Think positive and trust your doctor.

      1. Hi there! Being in south africa I feel very left out of new hope. I hve found that eating healthy and cutting milk out of my diet and doing exercise had made it possible to drink only 8 methotroxate rather than the prescribed 10. 10 pills just makes me dead inside. Nice to be human again. Is there any new research ith some hope? My friend jas aid and his docter said it’s better to have aids than RA because the research on aids cure is so extensive compared to RA. I was very depressed for a long time when he told me. I will however not loose hope!

  27. Indeed. I am not exaggerating but the kind of experience he holds it seems medicines follow his instructions. He told me that after 6 months you will able to sit in squat position and it happened after 6 months. He assured me that after 9 months you will able to use staircases. Now I can. I was stressed when RA attacked me as I am shuttle player. Now I am sure after few months I will able to play. I was worried for so many medicine usages. Buy DR Akerkar advised two tablets… Awesome. Its impossible to imagine a treatment with two tablets and that too RA. Hats off Doctor. 🙂

I found that eating a raw food diet, not meat, really helps my RA pain, have had it for 7 years, but just found the raw food helps heal so much. no more swollen knees, but i still have pain in shoulders, it is getting better though. So the diet is mostly salads & greens and juices in a juicer, such as celery and cucumber carrot, they are rally anti inflammatory and healing too. Turmeric can be added to the juices as well.
